  • The three videos are not related to each other.
  • The first video is related to a meeting between Ronaldo and an Iranian child.
  • The source and news pages of the video showing the Palestinian child with his jersey ripped off do not provide information that the jersey the child is wearing is a gift from Ronaldo.
  • The scene of Cristiano Ronaldo crying is from the Piers Morgan interview in 2019.

Claim Spread

A circulating social media post alleges that Ronaldo cried upon witnessing the jersey he gifted to the boy being torn across his back. To address this, we have examined the relevant video.

Evidence

We examined the three videos separately.

In the introduction, we can follow the video showing the child embracing Ronaldo from September 2023 news. Ronaldo, who plays for Saudi Arabia’s Al-Nassr club, met with an Iranian child, who cried when he couldn’t see him during the match, when he came to Iran for the match.

The video of the child with the torn jersey shown after this is shared on October 19, 2023, through Belal Khaled’s social media account. Khaled, sharing images from the war areas, mentioned in his Instagram bio that he is a photographer. In the description section of the post where he shared the relevant video, he wrote, “He loved Cristiano Ronaldo and dreamed of becoming a professional football player, but Israeli missiles tore this shirt and killed his dream.” In other words, he did not provide any information that the jersey was a gift from Ronaldo. We did not find also such information from news sources.

In the same account, a comparison was drawn between an Israeli hostage child, wearing the same jersey, whose clothes were clean, and the state of the Palestinian child’s jersey.

It is understood that the children in the two videos are different individuals. The child to whom Ronaldo gave the jersey is Iranian, while the child with the torn jersey is Palestinian.

The video of Ronaldo crying appeared in the news of 2019. The video shows the moments when the famous football player cried during his interview with Journalist Piers Morgan. Ronaldo could not control his tears when he was shown a video of his father during the interview.

As a result, the text written on three independent videos has no relation to reality. Therefore, the claim is false.

Footage of Cristiano Ronaldo declaring his support for Palestine or shedding tears for children in the region continue to be shared. We have previously examined the claim that Ronaldo gave a message of support for Palestine in the same context.
