Claim Spread

Today, we’ll spotlight a claim that circulated widely across various social media accounts and pages, garnering thousands of views on the X platform (formerly known as Twitter).

The individuals sharing the video, which we’ll investigate, allege that “The British ship Rubymar, which was attacked by the Houthis in the Gulf of Aden in the Arabian Sea, sank. This was reported by Sky News Arabia on February 19.”

The video shows what appears to be a huge ship sinking into the sea.

Evidence

The video mentioned above is not recent and is not related to the British ship that was targeted by the Houthi group, in the Gulf of Aden.

By using reverse image search method to verify the authenticity of the referenced video, the results revealed that the video is about the sinking of a cargo ship named “Stellar-Banner” off the coast of Brazil.

The original video was shared by a YouTube channel named “Brazil Mergulho” on June 12, 2020.

As per media reports, the giant ship Stellar Banner, belonging to the South Korean company Polaris Shipping, sank on June 12, 2020, 100 days after it ran aground, 100 kilometers off the coast of the Brazilian Maranhão region.

Based on this, it can be concluded that the video has nothing to do with the British ship that was targeted by the Houthi group, in the Bab al-Mandab Strait off Yemen.

It should be noted that the claim was circulated after the Houthi group announced that it had targeted a British ship last Sunday.

Media reports indicate that on Sunday, British maritime security firm Ambrey reported an incident involving a cargo ship registered in Belize and operated by Lebanon, which was flagged under the UK, reporting an attack in the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

In the context of recent events, Houthi activity has witnessed an increase since mid-November, as they continue to carry out attacks on international commercial ships navigating sea routes, whether through the Red Sea or the Arabian Sea, and heading towards Israel.

According to a statement issued by the Houthis, the group affirmed that “their operations in the Red and Arab sea will escalate and will not stop until the aggression stops and the siege on the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip is lifted”.
